World Time Zone Guide
The world is divided into 24 standard time zones, measured as offsets from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). Many countries also observe daylight saving time (DST), shifting their clocks by one hour in summer. Here are the major time zones you need to know.
Frequently Asked Questions
Go to the Convert Time tab, choose your source and destination city, then set the time using the slider or input fields. The result updates instantly.
New York (ET) is typically 5 hours behind London (GMT/BST). During daylight saving time transitions this may temporarily change to 4 hours. EST is UTC−5, London GMT is UTC+0.
Dubai (GST, UTC+4) is 4 hours ahead of London in winter and 3 hours ahead in British Summer Time. Dubai does not observe daylight saving time.
Tokyo runs on Japan Standard Time (JST), which is UTC+9. Japan does not observe daylight saving time. See the live world clock above for the exact current time in Tokyo.
Sydney (AEDT/AEST) is typically 10–11 hours ahead of London depending on the season. Both observe daylight saving time but in opposite hemispheres, so the difference shifts throughout the year.
Los Angeles (Pacific Time) is always 3 hours behind New York (Eastern Time). Both cities observe daylight saving time simultaneously, so the gap stays constant year-round.
India (IST, UTC+5:30) is 5.5 hours ahead of London in winter (GMT) and 4.5 hours ahead in British Summer Time. India does not observe DST.
For everyday use they are identical. UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the modern scientific standard and never changes for DST. GMT is the historical time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. All time zones are defined as UTC offsets.
DST is the practice of setting clocks one hour forward in spring and back in autumn to make better use of daylight. The US and Canada switch in March and November. Europe switches in late March and late October. Many countries including Japan, China, India, and most of Africa do not observe DST.
There are 24 standard time zones, but because of political borders and half-hour offsets (e.g. India at UTC+5:30, Nepal at UTC+5:45), more than 38 distinct time zones are in active use worldwide.
