World Time Zone Guide

The world is divided into 24 standard time zones, measured as offsets from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). Many countries also observe daylight saving time (DST), shifting their clocks by one hour in summer. Here are the major time zones you need to know.

UTC−5 / Eastern Time (ET)
UTC−5 (EST) / UTC−4 (EDT)
Used by New York, Toronto, Miami, and Washington D.C. Observes DST: clocks spring forward in March and fall back in November. EST is the standard offset in winter.
UTC−8 / Pacific Time (PT)
UTC−8 (PST) / UTC−7 (PDT)
Used by Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver, and San Francisco. California is 3 hours behind New York and 8–9 hours behind London.
UTC+0 / Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
UTC+0 (GMT) / UTC+1 (BST)
London, Dublin, and Lisbon. The UK observes BST (British Summer Time) in summer, moving to UTC+1. GMT is also used in Ghana, Iceland, and Senegal year-round.
UTC+1 / Central European Time (CET)
UTC+1 (CET) / UTC+2 (CEST)
Stockholm, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Rome, Madrid, and most of continental Europe. Switches to CEST in summer. 1 hour ahead of London, 6 hours ahead of New York.
UTC+3 / Moscow Time (MSK)
UTC+3 (no DST)
Moscow, Riyadh, Nairobi, and Istanbul. Russia abolished DST in 2014. Moscow is 2 hours ahead of Stockholm and 8 hours ahead of New York.
UTC+4 / Gulf Standard Time (GST)
UTC+4 (no DST)
Dubai and Abu Dhabi (UAE), Muscat (Oman), and Baku. No daylight saving time. Dubai is 4 hours ahead of Stockholm in summer and 3 hours in winter.
UTC+5:30 / India Standard Time (IST)
UTC+5:30 (no DST)
India uses a single time zone for the entire country. Mumbai and New Delhi are UTC+5:30 — a half-hour offset unusual among large nations. No DST observed.
UTC+8 / China Standard Time (CST)
UTC+8 (no DST)
Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, and Perth. China uses a single time zone despite its geographic span. 7 hours ahead of Stockholm in winter.
UTC+9 / Japan Standard Time (JST)
UTC+9 (no DST)
Tokyo and all of Japan. JST does not observe daylight saving time. Japan is 8 hours ahead of Stockholm in winter, 14 hours ahead of New York, and 1 hour ahead of Seoul.
UTC+10 / Australian Eastern Time (AET)
UTC+10 (AEST) / UTC+11 (AEDT)
Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Australia observes DST in the southern hemisphere summer (Oct–Apr). Sydney is typically 9–10 hours ahead of Stockholm.
UTC−3 / Brasília Time (BRT)
UTC−3 (no DST since 2019)
São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires. Brazil abolished DST in 2019. São Paulo is 4 hours behind London and 2 hours ahead of New York in winter.
UTC+12 / New Zealand Standard Time
UTC+12 (NZST) / UTC+13 (NZDT)
Auckland and Wellington. New Zealand is one of the first major countries to see each new day. It observes DST in the southern hemisphere summer (Sep–Apr).

Frequently Asked Questions

Go to the Convert Time tab, choose your source and destination city, then set the time using the slider or input fields. The result updates instantly.

New York (ET) is typically 5 hours behind London (GMT/BST). During daylight saving time transitions this may temporarily change to 4 hours. EST is UTC−5, London GMT is UTC+0.

Dubai (GST, UTC+4) is 4 hours ahead of London in winter and 3 hours ahead in British Summer Time. Dubai does not observe daylight saving time.

Tokyo runs on Japan Standard Time (JST), which is UTC+9. Japan does not observe daylight saving time. See the live world clock above for the exact current time in Tokyo.

Sydney (AEDT/AEST) is typically 10–11 hours ahead of London depending on the season. Both observe daylight saving time but in opposite hemispheres, so the difference shifts throughout the year.

Los Angeles (Pacific Time) is always 3 hours behind New York (Eastern Time). Both cities observe daylight saving time simultaneously, so the gap stays constant year-round.

India (IST, UTC+5:30) is 5.5 hours ahead of London in winter (GMT) and 4.5 hours ahead in British Summer Time. India does not observe DST.

For everyday use they are identical. UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the modern scientific standard and never changes for DST. GMT is the historical time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. All time zones are defined as UTC offsets.

DST is the practice of setting clocks one hour forward in spring and back in autumn to make better use of daylight. The US and Canada switch in March and November. Europe switches in late March and late October. Many countries including Japan, China, India, and most of Africa do not observe DST.

There are 24 standard time zones, but because of political borders and half-hour offsets (e.g. India at UTC+5:30, Nepal at UTC+5:45), more than 38 distinct time zones are in active use worldwide.
